As an ex-smoker, I can tell you the #1 reason.they are physically addicted to the nicotine!
I once read about a studt that concluded the ONLY thing more addictive than nicotine was HEROIN.
Smokers are in denial, too--they don't know how bad they STINK--even walking past them at the grocery store.they tell theirselves they LIKE to smoke (despite the constant hacking and spitting up morning "lung oysters".they say they CAN quit but don't want to.
It boils down to this--they are so powerfully hooked that most of them aren't strong enough to last the mere 5 days it would take to be UN-addicted physically. Even then, the mental addiction takes another 6+ months to beat----some people NEVER stop craving them.
It's a hard thing to overcome...and most people are too weak to do it successfully/
