Why do I lose my muscle tone/definition so quickly?

I work out a couple of times a week and straight after I have good muscle definition. But by the next day or the day after I hardly retain any of it. Is there anything I can do to maintain or improve my muscle definition without taking protein shakes/pills?
Answer:
eat more food with protein , best thing is tuna its cheap and has good amount of protein
It's because when you are working out you are filling whatever body part your working out with blood this makes it appear vascular and bigger, it's like a blood rush the next day your muscles aren't being worked so the blood rush subsides that is why they don't seem as toned
Not the way your are working out...what you see is a pump for blood from muscle use...doesn't last long. If you want real muscles, then I suggest you either hire a trainer and learn how to work out smart, or do massive reading on the subject. What you are doing is NOT working, and no food, etc. will change that. good luck
The muscle definition you mean is just a temporary rush of blood flow. Real muscle definition is made up of muscle, which is coems from protein. The body requires protein to build muscles. And when you work out, energy is consumed. From your state, you just work out but did not replenish the energy used, which it could also lead to muscle breakdown. Muscle breakdown is the state where your body doesnt get enough energy, thus it breaks down your muscles to become energy for the body to restore, making the body thinner and muscles seem smaller. If you seriously want to keep your muscle definition, you should take protein. No worries, proteins are a part of our daily diet, it comes from fish, eggs, milk etc. Its not like the pills you think which are steroids and will damage your body. But remember to drink lots of water too. When you workout you tend to dehydrate a lot also, as more than 60% of your body is composed of water, it plays a vital role in keeping the muscle mass.
yes, go for a protein shake. try to get a 100% protein one (these are not flavoured - they contain 0 caleries so when you stop working out you dont put weight on)
